The Global Voice of Universities

About

From the Founder

A letter from Prof. Bassem Khafagy, Founder and Secretary General.

To the universities of the world, and to everyone who shapes their future,

I write to you at a moment of profound transformation and shared responsibility. Across the world, universities are confronting forces of change unprecedented in their speed and scope. Artificial intelligence is reshaping how knowledge is created and passed on. Climate change is redefining responsibility and relevance. Shifts in geopolitics are altering the foundations of academic cooperation, and public trust in institutions is tested everywhere. These developments are structural, not temporary, and their consequences will reach well beyond our generation.

The world’s 35,000+ universities serve 260+ million students and employ millions of academics, researchers and professionals. No other institution on Earth carries a comparable responsibility for knowledge, leadership, ethics and the progress of societies. Yet the university world still meets these challenges largely in isolation, without a shared space to deliberate and without a voice that can speak for all of it.

Universities must own the changes they will need. The future of higher education cannot be defined only by governments, markets, technology platforms or outside agendas, however influential they may be. Adaptation without ownership leads to dependency, and change without vision leads to drift. Universities must move from reacting to change to shaping it, guided by their lasting responsibility to knowledge, to society and to humanity.

A collective voice does not mean uniformity, centralization or hierarchy. Universities differ by mission, size, culture, geography and context, and this diversity is a strength to preserve. What is needed is a shared platform, owned by universities themselves, where that diversity can meet in open dialogue, respectful disagreement and responsible alignment, and where universities can speak together when global responsibility requires it.

The World Universities Foundation exists for this purpose: a global and inclusive home for every university and every stakeholder in higher education, so that the future of the university is shaped by those entrusted with its mission.

I invite every university, and everyone who shares the conviction that the future of the university must be shaped by universities themselves, to take a seat at this table: as a founding voice, not a later guest. Whatever the size of your university and wherever it stands, there is a seat for it here.

The world is changing, humanity is watching, and universities, acting together, can still lead.

Respectfully,

Prof. Bassem Khafagy
