Refocusing on excellence in teaching
Why teaching must again stand beside research at the heart of the university.
In recent decades, universities have shifted their focus steadily from teaching toward research. The prestige and funding attached to research, and the weight given to it by rankings, have pushed publications, grants and position in league tables to the center of institutional priorities. Research has brought great benefits. But the shift has led many universities to lose sight of their first mission: to prepare the generations who will lead and manage the world of tomorrow.
The quiet decline of teaching
The historic heart of the university was excellent teaching: shaping young minds into critical thinkers, leaders and innovators. When research output is easier to count than good teaching, institutions bend toward what is counted. Teaching staff carry heavy research expectations and have less time for new methods or for their students. The student experience suffers, and so does the readiness of graduates for life beyond the university.
A gap between universities and society
Employers in many countries report a gap between the skills graduates bring and the skills work demands. Part of that gap comes from teaching that has been given too little attention. Universities must turn again toward the needs of their societies, with teaching that builds critical thinking, leadership and the ability to solve real problems.
What students now expect
Today’s students expect learning that is personal, engaged with real problems and connected to their future work. Where the pursuit of research prestige pushes their experience aside, their trust in the university weakens. A university that puts students first prepares graduates who are not only knowledgeable but able to navigate a complex world.
Five commitments for a balanced university
- Revalue teaching: reward and support excellent teaching as fully as excellent research.
- Deepen student engagement: teach through critical thinking, collaboration and problem solving.
- Answer to society: design programs around the real needs of societies and working life.
- Innovate in teaching: use new tools, from adaptive learning to immersive experiences, to serve learning.
- Support the teachers: give faculty the time, resources and recognition to excel in teaching and research alike.
Teaching and research in harmony
The future of the university is not only the pursuit of knowledge. It is how knowledge is shared, taught and applied. Teaching and research must live together, each given the attention it deserves. The university that puts its students first, and honors its teachers as fully as its researchers, will prepare the generation that leads the world.
